Ateneu (Who Are you)? Self-Reflection Series
Ateneu Self-Reflection Series
Some questions are older than any country, border, or generation. “Ateneu” draws from an Afaan Borana expression meaning “Who are you?”—a question that invites us to consider not only who we are as individuals, but also the people, histories, and relationships that have shaped us.
The Ateneu Self-Reflection Series is The Horn Dispatch's ongoing exploration of identity, belonging, inheritance, and choice. It asks what we receive from those who came before us, what we learn from one another, what we owe to those who come after us, and who we choose to become.
The series grows out of the personal reflections of THD's founder, an immigrant from East Africa who grew up in the United States while remaining deeply connected to his family and heritage across continents.
His reflections explore what it means to be both East African and American—not as competing identities, but as parts of a life shaped by different people, places, experiences, and opportunities. They also explore how our understanding of ourselves changes as we build families, strengthen communities, and begin passing forward the lessons and opportunities we inherited.
Ateneu begins with one person's reflections, but its questions belong to all of us. Our identities are shaped not only by the choices we make, but by the people who raised us, those who believed in us, those who challenged us, and those whose futures are now connected to our own.
Where do we come from? Who helped us become who we are? What do we carry forward? What can we learn from one another? And what responsibility do we have to those who will come after us?
Through personal stories, shared experiences, and reflections across generations, Ateneu invites us to better understand ourselves by understanding the people and communities to which we belong—and to consider the future we can build together.
